The Holland History House
Monday 23 August: 5 to 8 pm
At 5 pm, the bar in the Amsterdam Historical Museum will open with a free drink for all congress visitors.
The daily talk show, The remains of the day, will then start at 5.45 pm, presented by Hans Goedkoop and hosted by Jouke Turpijn, lecturer at the University of Amsterdam.
The subject of the first session is ‘The end of history’. Twenty years ago, Fukuyama pronounced the death of both ideology and history, yet today both are apparently alive and kicking. How has this happened, and what does it mean for the international community of historians? Former director of the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation and chairman of the local ICHS2010 organizing committee Hans Blom swaps views with our hosts.
We will then watch a short film of the first day of the congress, made by history students from the University of Amsterdam who will be reporting on the entire congress week as ‘the Holland History Hunters’.
The talking then continues with Peter Scholliers, lecturer in the History Department at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and vice-chairman of the International Commission for Research into European Food History (ICREFH), Garrelt Verhoeven, chief curator of Special Collections, University of Amsterdam, and culinary journalist Johannes van Dam. We will discuss what our food says about us and about the age in which we live. A finger lickin’ good conversation!
This is followed by a varied jazz programme by the Sue Moreno Trio, featuring pianist Henk Jan Heuvelink and saxophonist Mr Mills, finishing at 8 pm.

The Holland History House continues
Tuesday 24 August: 5 to 8 pm
The evening is kicked off at 5.45 pm by the legendary French historian Rogier Chartier, who joins us to talk about the history of reading and literature. We explore the boundaries of historical writing by also inviting along an historical novelist Machiel Bosman, to join Hans Goedkoop and Jouke Turpijn. Roger Chartier is the director of L’Ecole des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris and a specialist in the history of the book, while Machiel Bosman is author of the book Elisabeth de Flines. Can the historical novel serve as an accessible version of the historical discipline? We again round off the first session with a short film by the Holland History Hunters.
We then turn our attention to the special city that is hosting us this week. In ‘Amsterdam Eterna’ we discuss what is so unique about this little global city with various urban historians. Or are the Amsterdammers simply arrogant and is the claim of uniqueness self-serving? Peter-Paul de Baar, historian and chief editor of the magazine Ons Amsterdam, Guy Geltner, professor of Medieval History at Amsterdam University and specialist in urban culture and Paul Spies, director of the Amsterdam Historical Museum discuss.
After that, it’s time to relax. From 6.30 to 8 pm, West Hell 5 set the joint jumping with what they describe as Crime&Mod Jazz: blistering sax, haunting theremin, red-hot organ, razor-sharp percussion, throbbing bass and cool guitar-work.

Boat trip: ‘On Workers’ Palaces and Sea Castles’
Tuesday 24 August: 1 to 4 pm
A trip on the characteristic barge De tijd zal het leren (Time will tell) is the perfect way to discover the former docklands that made Amsterdam Harbour great. It was here that the ‘sea castles’ (as the Dutch sometimes call particularly impressive ships) used to drop anchor on the quays of Java Island and KNSM Island. There are also residential areas with an interesting social history and noteworthy architecture. The great harbour and railroad strike of 1903 started here. It remains the single largest strike in Dutch history, and laid the foundations of the nation’s labour movement.
The trip takes in old wharfs, renovated warehouses and silos and the Houthaven (‘Timber Docks’), and ends up at the Spaarndammerbuurt district, hidden between the harbour and the railway. Finally, there is a guided tour of the 'Workers’ palaces' on Spaarndammerplantsoen near the Het Schip Museum.

Museum Our Lord in the Attic – Open! Restoration
Tuesday 24 August: 5 to 7 pm.
On 24 August, Amsterdam’s second oldest museum is open for the participants of Holland History House from 5 to 7 pm. Discover the seventeenth-century town house with a hidden Catholic church in the attic.
In 1661 Jan Hartman, a young merchant from Germany, bought three adjacent houses. In the top storey’s of his home he built a church that served the parish until the late nineteenth century, at a time when Catholic worship was officially prohibited. The church became a museum in 1888 and was preserved for future generations to visit. At the moment the museum is restoring the seventeenth-century church. Visitors are welcome to take a look and follow this delicate process in the exhibition OPEN! Restoration.

Enjoy a wonderful organ concert in Amsterdam’s oldest church, the Oude Kerk
Tuesday 24 August: 8.30 pm
Alessandro Sbrizzi (an Italian musician specializing in the interpretation of Renaissance and Baroque music) will play the Goldberg Variations, one of Bach’s best-loved works. Although written for the harpsichord, the music can be played on the organ very successfully.
The organ of the Oude Kerk was built in Bach’s time, and is arguably the most authentic large organ of that period in the Netherlands.
Prior to the concert there will be a short introductory talk and you can enjoy a glass of prosecco.
Doors open at 8.30 pm. The concert starts at 9.00 pm.
Tickets €17, including free drink.

The Holland History House
Wednesday 25 August: 5 to 8 pm
In The Remains of the Day, Hans Goedkoop and Jouke Turpijn today talk to Jürgen Kocka and Valentijn Byvanck. Kocka is president of the Social Science Research Centre in Berlin and a specialist in modern German and European history. Byvanck is former director of the Zeeuws Museum and currently director of the Museum of National History. Taking ‘National histories, national museums?’ as our subject, we consider whether national history still has a place in today’s world. If so, is a national museum is a suitable place to present it...and how do you do so, anyway?
We then talk about ‘The relevance of being Dutch’. The discussion will range over a number of historical examples of the (ir)relevance of the Dutch in world history. From 6.10 to 6.30 pm, guests Henk te Velde and Pieter Lagrou consider the mighty and minor achievements of a small country. Henk te Velde is professor of Dutch History at the University of Leiden, while Pieter Lagrou is professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the author of The Legacy of Nazi Occupation: Patriotic Memory and National Recovery in Western Europe, 1945-1965.
The evening is rounded off in festive mood by Pacifix: four Dutchmen who have caught the latest musical bug from across the Atlantic. Surf and soul influences combine, and the organist swings his way through the music to complete the soul trash company.

Bus tour of the Golden Age country retreats
Wednesday 25 August: 1 to 5 pm
In the 17th century, the wealthy merchants of Amsterdam did not just invest in international trade: many put their money to work by building estates in the surrounding region. Some of these estates were created for profit, being used for farming or as hubs for land reclamation projects. But many also developed estates for leisure purposes, establishing country retreats to escape the noise and stench of the city.
On this bus tour, we escape the city ourselves and visit some of the finer examples of these magnificent Golden Age country retreats in the region surrounding Amsterdam.

The Holland History House
Thursday 26 August: 5 to 8 p.m.
Today’s first session of the talkshow The Remains of the Day is about ‘Telling stories’. If historiography is a form of storytelling, can you call it an academic discipline? Hayden White, professor emeritus at the University of California, historical theorist and one of the foremost post-war historical philosophers, joins Chris Lorenz, historical theorist and professor at the History Department of the Free University in Amsterdam.
After a short break, the importance of religion in the study of history is discussed by James Kennedy, professor of Dutch history at the University of Amsterdam, and Hugh McLeod, professor of church history at the University of Birmingham and president of CIHEC, the international organization of historians of Christianity (2005 to 2010). In ‘Religion matters’, we discuss how and why religion has made a comeback as a subject of study all over the world.

The Holland History House
Friday 27 August: 5 to 8 p.m.
What do you do when writing history puts your life in danger? Antoon de Baets (University of Groningen) has long been an international authority on the subject of exiled historians. In The Remains of the Day at 5.45 p.m. he joins Colombian refugee and historian Diana Gomez to discuss the use and abuse of history. The discussion is once again followed by a short film made by the Holland History Hunters on the final day of the congress.
At 6.10 p.m., we’ll be ‘talkin’ about my generation’. Now that the congress is nearly over, it’s time to look at the future. Who are tomorrow’s historians? How are they being educated? What does it mean to belong to a younger or older generation of historians? Is it necessary to break free from your own generation – and is it possible, anyway? Peter van Dam, a (young) history lecturer at the University of Amsterdam talks with Luigi Cajani, professor of modern history at the Università La Sapienza, Rome and editor of the book History Teaching, Identities and Citizenship.
From 6.30 to 9 p.m., the twenty-something’s of pop-group De Biet play numbers that were hip back in the sixties – long before they were born. As the final strains of De Biet die away, it’s over to DJ George Oostdijk with his swinging disco and soul to get everyone onto the dance floor to swing the night away.

A romantic evening in Haarlem
Friday 27 August: 7.30 to 10 p.m.
This is a unique opportunity to visit Haarlem, 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam. Haarlem has retained its authentic 17th-century centre, as depicted in so many well-known pictures. The evening starts with a reception in the medieval town hall, where all the counts of Holland, including Charles V and Philip II, were once welcomed. One of the more intriguing objects is a whalebone from the Arctic, which has hung from the ceiling since 1594.
After a walk around the soaring Bavo cathedral it is time to move into the 18th century with a visit to the world’s only authentic museum of the Enlightenment, the Teyler’s Museum. The original building was opened in 1784 as an institution to encourage contemporary art and scientific research, and gradually turned into the museum we see today, with its collections of paintings and drawings, fossils and minerals, scientific instruments, numismatic objects and a large library.
During this visit you will have access to areas which are normally off-limits to the general public, and you can savour the spirit of inquisitiveness which is still in the air.
The reception at the Town Hall starts at 7.30 p.m.; Teyler’s Museum is open from 8.30 to 10 p.m.
Admission and drinks: free
